Veterans Memorial Wall

Veterans Memorial WallThe Veterans Memorial Wall is located on the South end of the park, on a hill, very near the River Bridge. After much talk and many prayers the Town of Logansport and the Gordon Cohen American Legion Post 157/ Logansport Veteran’ Club of Logansport, Louisiana made a commitment to honor all of our military men and women. This was done with a standing memorial in the Town’s park so that all of our people could see the names of the many Veterans that have served our country so faithfully. The wall was dedicated during a ceremony at the site on July 4th, 1998. Mayor Dennis Freeman was the Master of Ceremony. The guest speaker for the ceremonies was Lieutenant General Orren R. Whiddon, a native of Joaquin, Texas. General Whiddon was Commanding General of the Second United States Army at the time of his retirement in 1990. Many other dignitaries too numerous to mention here, were present to honor our veterans.

The Veterans Memorial Wall began as one wall standing 6’ high and 12’ long with space for more than 2000 plates. Since the Veterans Memorial Wall’s inception available space for name plates was quickly filled. It was necessary to add two more six feet granite walls to accommodate all of the requested brushed stainless steel engraved name plates of men and women that have or are now serving our country. These two walls were placed and Phase II was dedicated July 4th 1998. The wall was built with donations and fund raisers and can be extended if more space is needed for additional names. Five flags; the American flag, State flags of Louisiana and Texas, MIA / POW and the Veterans Memorial WallAmerican Legion flags fly in a semicircle tower over the lighted monument. The grounds around the memorial wall are now lit by a patriotic display of red, white and blue holiday lights during the Christmas season. This display was placed honoring the memory of our brave and heroic men and women, by a local family.

You will find a large number of veterans listed on this memorial. Anyone can purchase a plaque and add the name of a veteran to this memorial. Each year the Town of Logansport has a Memorial Day Program, honoring those that served, and the Veterans Memorial Wall is the backdrop and site of this program.  To send a love offering make checks payable to “Veterans Memorial Fund” P.O.
